I Walk In This World

Healthy eats, often with a side of snark

Hello from Portland, ME

Greetings from the Pine Tree State!

We just got back from Flatbread Company for Din where we enjoyed Fabulous flatbreads that were all organic + local.

  • organic baby greens salad w/homemade berry vinagrette
  • pineapple + prosciutto + blue cheese flatbread (mine)
  • local hormone-free fennel sausage + carmelized onions + mushrooms flatbread (Hubz)

His was good, mine was Better!  Mine was very unique and delish.  The salad was great too.  I had 2 beers, a Smuttynose Shoal Pale Ale and a Long Trail IPA.

Before Din, I exercised in the hotel gym for a while.  Got in 2 miles on the treadmill and felts heaps better afta.  FYI.  I ADORE how people speak here.

I gonna paaahk the caaaaah in the laht up in Baaaaah Haaaabaa.

LOVES it!

Our hotel in Portland is mega nice, which is a mega nice change from yesterday’s krap hole.  Yay!  We’re right on the water and walking distance to all the cool stuff in Old Port.

Anyone know Portland really well?  I have the afternoon to myself tomorrow, and am looking for suggestions for what to do/see.  Hubz has to work at his company’s Portland office, so I’ve got some solo time!  Then we’re heading up the road to Baaahhhh Haaahhhbor for 3 nights/4 days.  Woot!

Lunch was a veggie burger + way too many sweet tater fries at the Sunday River Brewery in Bethel, ME.  Great beers here too!

We spent late morning ascending Mt. Washington, NH.  It’s in the Presidential Range (part of the Appalachains), and there’s an 8-mile (scary) car route that goes to the summit.  We had hoped to hike the last part up, but there is No Where to pull off and hike on up.  It’s simply too steep.  And Hi.  It was nearly 70 degrees at the base of the Mtn and a balmy 34 at the summit.  Picture Erin freezing her assnats off.

Summit!!

Apparently my dog is a natural rock climber.  She LOVED it up there.

Pretty waterfall on the northern end of the Wildcat River this morning.

Breks this morning was a scallion + tomato + cheese omelette.  I ate half + 2 pieces of the whole wheat toast.  Plus loads of coffee.

Consider your blog friend Erin de-cat-peed-grossed-out and much calmer having moved on to way fancier digs here in the city.  And the place up in Bar Harbor is meant to be top notch, so here’s hoping.

Hope y’all have great TGIFridays.

Er

The flatbread looks divine. And haha, great example of how people speak there. I love it!

Mt. Washington looks awesome– gorgeous pictures! That waterfall is so pretty.

Have fun tomorrow! I’ve never been to Portland, so I have no clue what stuff there is to do there. But I’m sure you’ll find something :D Have a great night!

Hiya! We just went to the Portsmouth (NH) Flatbread Co. the other day…. isn’t it heavenly??

Hiking Mt. Washington is pretty disappointing - because it’s HARD, then you make it to the summit, and there are a bunch of old people complaining that the stairs to the gift shop are too steep :) Might as well drive up!

You can easily spend the afternoon in Portland wandering into shops…. I love Abacus on Exchange St. Oooh - and don’t forget to check out Gritty’s for some good ol’ Maine brews!

That Wildcat River pick is GORGE!!! I think your presence in the photo enhances the natural beauty of the area. (You can roll your eyes at the ass kissing attempt. :P )

That omelet looks delish. I think I will make omelets for dinner tonight! Thanks for the inspiration!

My husband and I did a B&B trip to New England last summer and spent two nights in Portland as well. We went to the Shipyard Brewing Company, which does a pretty good tour, and free tasting. If you can, drive out to Cape Elizabeth - maybe 5-7 miles outside Portland??? - and go to Two Lights. It is known for their Lobster Rolls, and the lines were insane when we went. Only downside, they don’t serve booze. So, stop off and pick up a bottle of vino, or some beers before you go. And if I recall, the shopping in that central part of Portland was fairly good, and a time killer. Enjoy your time there!

Keely is ALSO a natural rock climber! I took her to hike Mt. Wachusett (summit = 2000 ft ;) yesterday and she totally kicked my butt.

Glad you’re having a good time! xo

Portland…well, you can always take the ferry out to the Calendar Islands. They’re mostly residential, but it’s a nice loop ride in calm waters and I think that your dog would be allowed to go with you…so all inclusive. A plus. I second the recommendation for Shipyard Brewing Co. Seems to stick out in my head as a great place to grab a pint.

Erin, Portland is amazing! Eat a lobster roll or 5. There is a little dive bar on the water on the main road in to town. It’s on the right near a marina type place. It’s amazing. I enjoyed going to 2 lights lighthouse. It’s great. Great food! There is a a great brewery in the middle of town, in the shopping district. The pottery is amazing. Have fun!
