magnum
So I’m driving home from work today and I see this car (?) on the highway.

Ok.
WTF is this?
Is it a car?
Maybe it’s a funeral hearse? Or a station wagon? Or a movie prop? Or maybe it’s just a special car for crackheads? Yep. I bet it was designed to cart crackheads around.
Cuz you gotta be really high or Out of your Mind to think this is cool or stylish or gangsta or expensive looking or any of the above.
But not White Dude wearing Big Frame Dolce Sunglasses.

He thought he was Bad Ass. Driving in the right hand lane. Windows down. Maroon 5 a’blastin
. Head bobbin.
I mean…
C’mon. How can anyone take this seriously?
Imagine you’re on a first date, and dude drives up in this car. Or your friend is taking your kids to soccer practice, and Mom drives up in this car. Or you’re carpooling to work, and coworker pulls up in This Car.
I don’t think I’d get in. I’d probably just call in sick.
Swenyway.
Din.

Leftovers from late last week. I had the remains of the creamy portabella max n cheese (with added kale, mushies, and bison). And a ginorm salad featuring fresh-from-the-toaster-oven whole wheat croutons. What’s that noise you ask? No worries. Just the smoke alarm going off. Erin nearly set the croutons on fire.
But alas…all is well.
Hey.
I ran 2.5 miles today.
So. Who gets shin splints? Cuz I need help. I know I am a chronic sufferer, so that’s just life. But I need sneaker recommendations. What do y’all run in?

Marianne says:There are way too many cars on the market that make me go WTF? The Magnum is definitely one of them. I think it’s supposed to be a “modern muscle car”, but I think it fails miserably.

Lyds says:I also hate that car…but on to the shin splints…
Rest and running on soft surfaces (shift over to the grass whenever possible, etc) are your best options. You can try new shoes if yours are old or just not working for you anymore, but make sure to get fitted at a running store and let them know you have shin splints.
You can also ice (20 min on/20 min off for 1h 20m) after running.
When I ran track (hurdles and long jump) where I was getting up on my toes a lot, I had shin splints so bad I had to ice for 30 min right before my races/jumps so I’d be too numb to feel them. My coach would massage them until I’d cry. It can be downright awful.
I got them bad again 2 wks before my marathon. I rested for the two weeks and drank carrot juice (I read online somewhere that it helps with the shin splints) and was ok for the race, but they do recur now and then…
Make sure to stretch before and after running, too!

Sarah (lovINmytummy) says:At first I thought that was tofu on your salad.
I had HORRID 6 Advil a day shin splints until I got orthodics made for my shoes. I have low arches, which is my problem. It might be worth seeing a podiatrist or your gen. prac. to see if they’ll prescribe them.

And no car is as ridiculous as the Nissan Cube.

marie says:Hehe–I always think of that car as a hearse and imagine Lurch is driving it.

Sarah says:I like that car, we have lots of them around here. They’re actually pretty neat, we got in one at a car show.

Jessica says:I have these cute nike shoes with pink signs that can support my wobblin’ ankles! Woo!
And yay for 2.5 miles!
That dinner composed of leftovers is looking fab…can I please have some of that mac n’ cheese? K thanks!

Lara (Thinspired) says:Hehe–that is a funny car. It looks like a hearst!
About the shoes–when I started running I got fitted for shoes at a running store. They did a full analysis of my foot (FLAT) and stride. It was awesome. I ended up with a pair of Brooks and I LOVE THEM! I definitely recommend the brand. They have held up well and they were affordable compared to some of the other ones.

Lynne says:Those cars are ridiculous. It’s especially funny when I see little old ladies driving them.

I suggest going to a running store and getting fit for a proper shoe. It might be a bit pricey ($100) but you’re getting what you pay for and will make a world of a difference. Also upgrade your socks to a sweat wicking material. That may help.
I always though pt cruisers looked like mini hearses. No offense to anyone that owns one though!

Melissa (Nibbles and Wiggles) says:Have you ever gone to a running store to get fitted where they analyze your gait? I can’t recommend it enough!

~Designer Gal~ says:2.5 miles!!!! Way to GO! You KNOW how I feel about this car, ahem!(Ps… There’s a lil green guy getting ready to hop in your salad plate in your first dine pic!)

Chelle says:That’s a Dodge, right? Might not be around too long anyway with Chrysler having problems…

Ashley says:*raises hand* I get AWFUL shin splints. And this whole ‘rest and run on soft surfaces’ mumbo jumbo hasn’t been working for me. I rest… and then no matter how small a run I do, my shins are fired up again. Its awful! Sneaker recommendations…? I actually need to get a new pair myself so might see what everyone suggests for you!
Delicious looking din.
Mortifyingly embarassing car (and that’s without the awful Maroon 5)

Sherilyn says:I don’t get shin splints but I love Mizunos for running! I buy a new pair every 6 months or so. They are around $100 and I got them at a local running store.
I hate that car - it does look like a hearse. Ick.

Ken says:Hey Erin, I have a problem with shin splints too, all started with ill advised bare-footed ultimate frisbee during college… OH those were heady days. But I digress, what works for me is to limit my running to 3 to 4 days a week max, and downward dog. Lots of downward dog. I usually do 20 to 30 min of Mountain to Forward Bend to Lunge to Downward dog and then back up holding each for about a 10 count except Downward dog which I hold for about 15 seconds and then build to 30 seconds as I warm up. I do this before I run and then a slower more downward dog intensive set after I run (just cool down enough so that you don’t get light-headed from being upside-down). Anyway, thats what works for me.
Hope you are doing great!
